Medieval and early modern English drama proliferates characters and devices that mediate between spectator and spectacle, calling attention to the process of theatrical representation as such. Characters of this kind range from expositors or moralising commentators to figures that belong at once to the world of the audience and to the world of the play, worlds which are often spatially coded.
