La scissura (Glaubespaltung) luthérienne est l’un des « événements majeurs » des Temps Modernes. L’affichage des 95 thèses à l’église du château de Wittenberg – geste théâtral en soi puisqu’il renvoie aux disputes universitaires – dont on a commémoré en 2017 les cinq siècles, inaugure une période d’extraordinaire instabilité politique et confusion doctrinale en Europe.
Hector is widely regarded as Montchrestien’s most accomplished achievement within the conventions of turn-of-the-century neo-classical French tragedy, following in the line of Robert Garnier but with increased distance from any topical political application. Certainly, on these terms it is a powerful piece of poetic theatre.
