Synopsis : An attentive but naïve father is looking for husbands for his three daughters, in keeping with sound paternal
practice at the time. His problem is that the girls are rather eccentric, to say the least. And so are the suitors he
finds for them. This outwardly ordinary sample of bourgeois society turns out to be a little world of its own, inhabited
by harmless lunatics, all afflicted by what the author calls “those kinds of madness for which people are not locked
up”. The result is that, while the ending of the comedy proves far from conventional, the outlandish world it portrays
finally seems surprisingly close to our own.

Résumé : Un père attentif mais quelque peu naïf a trois filles à marier ; il s’en préoccupe, ce qui paraît tout à fait normal. Le problème c’est que les filles, elles, n’ont pas toute leur raison, loin s’en faut. Pas plus que les prétendants qu’il leur trouve. En fait, il s’agit d’un petit monde habité par des « doux dingues », tous atteints, selon l’auteur, « de ces folies pour lesquelles on ne renferme personne ». De sorte que la fin de cette comédie s’avère peu banale, et qu’en fin de compte son monde ressemble drôlement au nôtre...
